It almost took Astralis another year to reach a final, after getting dismantled by Spirit 0:3 at PGL Astana 2025, but they will now be facing FUT, a team basking in the glitter of a Grand Final arena at a major event for the first time. Regardless of the outcome tomorrow, it is going to be a compelling final to tune in to, as both teams have gone through quite a demanding run to reach this stage of PGL Bucharest 2026.

The journey to the Final has been smoother for FUT

For Astralis, PGL Bucharest 2026 started with a composed 2:0 win over MIBR, followed by a tightly contested one against B8. Then, after humbling The MongolZ, leaving them scrambling with single-digit scores, they reverse-swept EYEBALLERS in the Quarter-Finals. A close yet clinical 2:0 win over 3DMAX then secured them the Grand Final appearance.

For FUT, I’d say the road was much tougher, yet their journey appeared far more seamless. The only map they dropped was against Inner Circle, after which they overcame NRG, PARIVISION, B8, and The MongolZ, all without conceding a single map. It has been a dominant run, but most of the opponents they have faced have still been comparatively inexperienced. Playing Astralis in a BO5 final that demands endurance might be a different ordeal altogether.

Will Astralis throw a curveball in the veto?

Being a best-of-five game, there isn’t much to dissect in the veto. FUT is going to ban Inferno, and Astralis is going to ban Anubis. These maps have been the perma-ban for the respective team throughout the tournament without fail. The curveball Astralis could throw here is banning Dust2 instead of Anubis, which FUT don’t particularly favor either, but other than that, it is going to be fairly straightforward.

Mirage, being FUT’s preferred pick throughout the tournament, is going to favor them. Ancient and Overpass, being Astralis’ comfort picks, are likely to tilt in their direction. Out of the remaining two maps, if things unfold as expected, FUT should pick Dust2, turning Nuke into the actual decider.

Nothing to lose, everything to gain

For Astralis, who have quietly ascended to third in the VRS, this win is going to be monumental. The last time the red and black jersey was in the spotlight after winning a tier-one grand final was almost six years ago. They have gone through rebuild after rebuild since then, changing players, nationality compositions, coaching staff, and more. And even though a win here will not signify an immediate return to dominance, it will grant the players and the organization some much-needed reprieve from the constant existence in the shadows. And frankly, they have long been due for such a moment of relief.

For FUT, well, a win is a win for any team regardless. But this could be their gateway to confidence. These young guns possess the firepower to topple an empire. And confidence is, more often than not, lethal in the hands of the young. If they secure a trophy now, that confidence alone would most likely help them cement themselves in the top 10 for a considerable period. And even though Astralis are the higher-ranked team, I believe FUT to be the more formidable of the two contenders at this moment.
