CS 1.6 Remake – Is CS Legacy Cancelled?

In early 2025, CS Legacy announced itself to the world as a faithful CS 1.6 remake that brought Valve’s classic shooter up to modern standards. The announcement trailer was flashy, and fans were taken by the concept of the game, which was being brought to life by ex-CSPromod developers to keep the old-school FPS experience alive. Importantly, CS Legacy claimed to be using “100% custom game code and game assets,” which in theory should have protected the project from any legacy action from Valve.

CS 1.6 Remake – Is CS Legacy Cancelled?

News on the CS 1.6 remake went quiet after its announcement, despite the initial hype. Fans are used to projects like this coming and going, leading to fans asking, “Is CS Legacy cancelled?” We’re going to answer that question here, because the truth is a little complicated.

CS Legacy is transforming into a new IP

In July 2025, just four months after CS Legacy was announced, the developer received a message from a Valve employee “suggesting that the use of the Counter-Strike IP (intellectual property) might no longer be allowed without a separate, dedicated license.” Although the developer was certain that the CS 1.6 remake “is fully aligned with the Source SDK’s license and their Steamworks guidelines,” it was unable to get a concrete answer on whether the project would be able to release using the Counter-Strike name.

CS Legacy was given a further update from the developer in January 2026. The developer was still unable to contact anyone at Valve about whether they could release the project, even for free, so they decided to pivot to a brand-new IP built with the Godot game engine, using some of the existing work from CS Legacy as a starting point.

So, is CS Legacy cancelled? Technically, yes. Development is frozen unless Valve’s stance on the hyped CS 1.6 remake changes. The developer says that it will continue to attempt to contact Valve in the meantime, but will continue working on its own multiplayer FPS title if it doesn’t hear anything.

At the moment, it’s still very early days for the new IP, which will feature “Quake-like movement” according to the development team. 2026 will be a massive year for the project, and it will be exciting to see how it comes along throughout the year.

That said, there will be some disappointment that the original vision of a CS 1.6 remake doesn’t seem likely to come to fruition. Because of Valve’s commitment to delivering new content to Counter-Strike 2, an official remake of the classic title seems very unlikely, too. It would be a major conflict for Valve, and it wouldn’t want to pull players away from its flagship multiplayer title in favor of a remake of a 25-year-old game.

Other cancelled CS 1.6 remakes in the past include the likes of Classic Offensive, which was also denied release on Steam after years of development. The good news is that you can still play CS 1.6 online nowadays, and it has a massive Steam player base with tons of servers available to enjoy the classic title.
